The new CECT P168 Quadband is getting a lot of buzz. But, the original P168 had almost a cult following. Consumers are a bit confused as to how the new quadband version differs from the original and wonder if it is worth it to chase the Quadband when the original is so popular and still works just great.

The basic difference between the Quadband and the original is that the new version is a quad band rather than a tri band. This means it is GSM GPRS 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 and will work with any carrier worldwide. Tri band is very comprehensive and works with most networks, but the quadband removes any doubt whatsoever.

Additionally, the Quadband version added a webcam and surround sound. CECT has also upgraded the firmware and Bluetooth features with the new version. The upgrade that has perhaps received the most attention is the slide unlock feature. You can easily unlock the phone with a slide of your hand. (This is really only an issue though if for some reason you were buying an original CECT P168 that wasn’t unlocked. Most all of the CECTs available are already unlocked.)

The new quad band version has all of the popular and sought after features that the old version had. You are still allowed to use whichever carrier you wish and do not have to depend upon AT&T. Nor do you have to depend on the manufacturer to remove your battery. Both P168 versions have the removable batteries that the iPhone doesn’t. Both phones have touch screens, the ability to surf the web, download and listen to music, record and play video and two sim slots allowing you to basically have separate phone numbers for business and leisure. (Both phones will work with only one sim or number as well).

Surprisingly, the Quadband is not usually more expensive than the original. They are both priced very competitively and run about $130 or less. For the amount of features stuffed into these little phones, as well as the AT&T savings, both phones are head and shoulders above the iPhone.
