Opera Browsers to Get Geolocation Powers

Today Opera Software and Skyhook Wireless announced a new partnership to bring location information to web browsers. Using Skyhook’s Wi-Fi positioning system and the W3C Geolocation API, web site developers will be able to make their web sites location aware. This means end users — whether browsing from a desktop or mobile device — will be able to access relevant local content on those sites. End users will have to opt-in to allow Opera to see its location and submit it to the Internet.

Motorola Shutters Its Movie Download Site

Motorola has confirmed that it ceased operations and has closed a movie download web site that it launched with Paramount Studios six months ago. The site allowed users to download mobile-friendly versions of movies that were playable on Motorola handsets such as the Z8 and Z10. The two men responsible for launching the store, senior director Andrew Till and regional manager Steven Trew, left Motorola in January. One reason cited for the site’s failure was poor marketing and a lack of visibility by Motorola customers.

Sony Ericsson Teams Up With Maria Sharapova for the T707

Today Sony Ericsson announced a new fashion phone with professional tennis player Maria Sharapova. The T707 clamshell lights up when calls or messages are received, and the colors can be customized to represent specific callers. It also lets users silence calls or the alarm by waving their hand over the phone through the use of proximity sensors. It has themes that will automatically change depending on the time of day. The T707a (for North America) has quad-band GSM/EDGE and tri-band 850/1900/2100 UMTS/HSDPA. It also features a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and video capture, stereo Bluetooth, FM radio with RDS, YouTube, GPS and support for memory cards. It will be available in select markets starting in the second quarter.

Google Debuts BlackBerry Mobile App with Voice Search

Today Google introduced a version of the Google Mobile Application specifically for BlackBerries. The mobile app will allow BlackBerry users to perform voice searches and adds My Location features to search, as well. This means that users can speak search queries into their BlackBerries and receive local results based on their current location. Google Mobile for BlackBerries is a free download.

Alltel Boosts MyCircle Numbers by 5

Starting Friday, March 27, Alltel’s MyCircle 10 and MyCircle 20 customers will be able to add an extra 5 numbers to their MyCircle calling plans at no extra cost. This expansion is valid in the 91 markets that are still operating as Alltel wireless. My Circle 15 starts at $60 per month and includes 900 anytime minutes, and My Circle 25 starts at $100 per month and includes 2,100 anytime minutes.

Zer01 Provides More Details About Its Service

Today Zer01 offered more insight to how its planned unlimited voice and data mobile services will work. For $70 per month, Zer01 users will get unlimited service across the U.S., and according to Zer01, around the world. Zer01 said it plans to announce an international unlimited voice and data service without any commitments or contracts in the near future, though it didn’t say what the pricing would be. Zer01 need to provide their own smartphones. The company has licensed patent-pending proprietary Veritable Mobile Convergence (VMC) Technology from the Unified Technologies Group, which also happens to own Zer01. This technology bypasses carrier circuit-switched channels by funneling voice communications through a VoIP system and onto a virtual private network that accesses the Internet. This is what allows Zer01 users to make voice calls or access the Internet through AT&T’s network.

Android to Get Flash Courtesy of Bsquare

A company called Bsquare recently announced that it has been charged with bringing Adobe’s Flash technology to the Android platform. In a press release, Bsquare said a global tier 1 carrier made the request. At the moment, Android is only available from T-Mobile USA, and will soon be available from Vodafone. Flash will permit richer mobile Internet and multimedia applications on Android devices. No time frame for Flash availability on Android was announced. Bsquare bought NEC America’s Adobe Flash Technology Consulting and Distribution business about a year ago.

Sprint to Expand Its 4G Footprint, Offer More 4G Devices

Today Sprint announced a major planned expansion of its WiMax-powered 4G footprint. Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Portland and Seattle will all see service launched some time during 2009. Sprint also said that it plans to launch WiMax service in Boston, Houston, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. during 2010. In addition to the new markets, Sprint plans to offer new devices this year, including a single-mode 4G data card, embedded laptops, a broadband modem and a tri-mode phone. For the moment, Sprint’s WiMax service is still only available in Baltimore. Sprint didn’t say exactly when these additional markets will go live.

Nokia Makes Investment in Mobile Payment Company

Today Nokia announced that it is investing in a California-based company that facilitates mobile payments. Obopay already allows people to make payments to one another via text message in the U.S. and India. Funds are drawn from bank accounts or credit cards that are registered to the mobile phone. Nokia invested in Obopay from its general funds, not its venture capital division, suggesting that Nokia wants to have closer ties to how Obopay operates. Nokia’s Teppo Paavolo, head of corporate business development, will be granted a seat on Obopay’s board. The size of Nokia’s investment was not disclosed.

ST-Ericsson Takes EDGE to the Edge

Today ST-Ericsson announced new EDGE platforms that will allow for a wider feature set on entry-level handsets in emerging markets. The 4910 and 4908 platforms combine digital and analog basebands, RF transceiver and power management unit onto a single chip. The provides for better multimedia support, security and battery life. The two platforms have a very low cost of materials, so they can be used on entry-level handsets without adding significantly to the cost.
