Shazam is an application that identifies a song just by holding your iPhone in range of the song that is playing. That means when you are in the car, watching a movie, grocery shopping, sitting at the pool, hanging out at Starbucks or where ever you are…if you hear a song that you like but do not know the title of the song or the artist, all you need to do is open Shazam and voilà….it will figure it out for you! I must say, Shazam is quickly becoming one of my favorite App Store applications!

When you open Shazam, you will get an intro screen giving you information about the application. To identify a song while it is playing, select the Tag Now option in the upper right corner. This will bring you to a screen that will “listen” to the song. When it is finished “listening” which takes around 15 seconds, it will automatically bring up the information for that song (be patient, you may have to wait a second for it to give you the info). If Shazam was not able to identify the song, it will give you a screen saying they were unable to identify the song and give you a few hints on what might be wrong. If Shazam does identify the song, you will get an information screen.

The information screen displays the Artist, Title, Subtitle, Album Art and Album for the song. It will also give you the option to preview and purchase the song via iTunes and the option to view a YouTube video in relation to the song. If you scroll down a little more you also have the option to Take and Attach Photo, Attach Album Photo, Share Tag and Delete Tag. The Take and Attach Photo and Attach Album Photo options allow you to change the Album Art photo with one of your own photos. However, it will only display your custom image when the information screen is open. On the main Tags list, it will still display the original Album Art. If Shazam does not find album art for the song, it will pull in a default image. The Share Tag option allows you to email a Tag to another person. However, the person you email the info to cannot actually view the Tag unless they have Shazam on their iPhone too. They are able to see the title and artist of the song but, not the entire Tag. Honestly, I couldn’t get this option to work. It would send the email but the “click here to add this tag to your list” link did not work. The Delete Tag option will delete the Tag you are currently in.

Once you are finished viewing the information, you can select My Tags in the upper left corner to view the main list of your Tags (a tag is created every time Shazam identifies a song). The main list of Tags is where the application will open from now on.

Overall, I found this application was able to identify songs about 90-95% of the time (based on the genre of music I tested). I’m sure this number will vary based on the type of music you are trying to identify. Also, Shazam is only able to identify recorded music…that means no karaoke night for this app. I really like this application and will definitly be keeping it around for a while. Let me know in the comments what your experience has been with Shazam.

Based on reader comments as well as news reports, it appears that some of the iPhone users who have upgraded to the latest firmware are observing sluggishness in UI, freezing, apps crashing etc while some who have just bought Apple’s new iPhone 3G are complaining that their iPhone 3G’s signal strength is not very good.

There could be relief on the way as Boy Genius (BGR) recently reported that they have noticed some interesting build numbers for the iPhone and iPhone 3G in their web server logs.

BGR is reporting that AT&T and Apple are testing iPhone firmware 2.0.1, builds 5B101 for the original iPhone and 5B103 for iPhone 3G as seen from the screenshots of their web server logs.

They have noticed that testing began prior to iPhone firmware 2.0 and iPhone 3G release on July 11th thus suggesting that Apple could release iPhone firmware 2.0.1 soon.

They have also gone to the extent of narrowing down the test users to the San Francisco (40 mins from Cupertino) and Atlanta (HQ of AT&T Mobility) areas.

They don’t have any details on what the new firmware update will include but I don’t expect Apple to release any new feature in firmware In my opinion iPhone firmware (if released) will be exclusively for bug fixes.

Lets hope the iPhone firmware 2.0.1 update fixes all your problems. Your thoughts?

The pre-release version of Apple’s iPhone firmware 2.0 which was available only to members of the iPhone developer program had revealed some interesting features, so I thought of trying them out to see if they made it to the release version.

If you were looking for a feature to save images from your iPhone’s Safari browser or its Mail app then it has got a lot simpler with iPhone firmware 2.0.

The feature works as follows: just hold your finger on an image in iPhone’s Safari Browser for a longer time than usual, a pop-up dialog will appear (as can be seen in the screenshot below) which gives you options such as “Save Photo”, “Go To URL” and “Cancel”. Hitting “Save Photo” will save the image in the photo app.

This feature works in iPhone’s mail app as well. You can save images sent as email attachments following the same procedure. You can also see the video clip of the feature below.

PangeaVR is an application that allows you to view panoramas on the iPhone. If you are not familiar with panoramas, they are 360 degree photos taken with a special camera. When you open the application you will get the main menu screen. There is an upper menu bar with the options Help, Settings and Games. Help and Games will open external browsers bringing to you more info about PangeaVR or to a list of all the iPhone games by Pangea Software, Inc. (Engimo which is Doug’s absolute favorite App Store app and CroMag Rally). The Settings option will give you the option to change the Panorama Orientation between Automatic which would load the photo in which even direction is was created in, Portrait which would load the panoramas in portrait mode or Landscape which would load the panoramas in landscape mode. You are also given the ability to turn on/off Drift and the ability to change the Drag Sensitivity. You will understand both these setting a little more once you have used the application but, I turn the drift off and the sensitivity WAY down. Once you have selected your Setting, tap Done in the upper left corner.

Back on the main menu screen, there is also a lower menu bar with the options; Home (which is the screen you are on right now), Browse, Bookmarks and Enter URL. The Bookmarks option will bring you to a list of the panoramas that you have saved as favorites. The Enter URL option allows you to download a panoramas from a from a website. You are given specific instruction on what the file type and size should be of the panorama you are downloading. The Browse option is where you will most likely want to begin!

When you select Browse, you will get a spinny wheel of portfolio options. Each of the portfolios will have a variety of panoramas inside of them. As you scroll through the portfolios, it will display a description of the portfolio in green just below the spinny wheel. To open a portfolio, just select the title of the portfolio and then select the Open Portfolio option. The Web Site option will open that portfolio’s website in an external browser. The first portfolio that I chose was Australia by Panedia.com.

Once you open the portfolio you will get another spinny wheel of all the panoramas inside of that portfolio. As you scroll through them it will display a thumbnail of the panorama. You will also notice a menu bar with the options; go back to the previous menu, View the Panorama, information on where the panorama was taken (Aa icon), the option to view the location in Google Maps and the ability to add it to your Favorites list (+ icon). When you select View Panorama it will download that image and then display it full screen. You can then use your finger to drag the panorama around. You can go in a full 360 degree circle in any direction…up, down, all around! You can also turn your iPhone to change the image from landscape to portrait and then back again. This is a ton of fun! I love panoramas! If you double tap on the screen you will get a menu with the options: Resume, End and Settings.

Overall, this application is great. There are a ton of panoramas to choose from, the application is smooth and it does what it is supposed to. Not only that but, who doesn’t love panoramas!!

Click HERE to download PangeaVR from the App Store.

The Dev Team continues to keep us updated on their progress. They are still trying to work out a few bugs (scroll way down) but, they have posted a list on what PwnageTool 2.0 supports so far. It looks as though everything can be jailbroke and activated however, they do not have the iPhone 3G unlocked yet. Check it out:

So, currently (when released) PwnageTool 2.0 will support:-

• iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 - Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

• iPod Touch with 2.0 - Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

• iPhone (3G) with 2.0 - Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).

We’ve made some progress on the baseband unlock of the 3G device, but at this point PwnageTool will not support 3G unlocking or BootNeuter on the 3G device. It is, of course supported on the first generation device with 2.0. We’ll push out an update with 3G support if and when it is completed.

As soon as we fix this up and test a bit more we’ll be ready for release, we’ll get back to you with a release schedule soon.

So we’ve been working hard on getting the release ready and during this process we’ve been fixing some final bugs, the actual base of PwnageTool application is working fine and working with all devices that we support. We’ve been restoring our devices to various firmware revisions so that we can try to reproduce the conditions that most users will have. We are able to fully install any applications on any part of the current devices running 2.0 (and b103) and these versions are the iPhone 114, iPhone 2.0, iPhone 3G.

Apple released an update (b103) just before we were about to release and that support had to be added to the current version, it is pointless to release something that doesn’t work on devices out of the box (we’ve been told new 3Gs will have this firmware), we don’t want drama, and we want to do as little support as possible, so we want to make it right the first time.

It was lucky that we delayed slightly as we discovered a bug that causes unexpected behavior when using AppStore and third party applications on the same device. We are working on fixing that bug now, we don’t anticipate it is a big one, it has some really odd side effects, causing WiFi dropouts and the loss of stored passwords for WiFi networks. Of course this is only a minor software issue, nothing like the horrible static MAC address that another “elite byte adjuster” forced upon their users.

BoxOffice is an application that allows you to search for theaters and movies available in those theaters based on location. When you open the application you will get a blank screen and a lower menu bar with the options; Movies, Theaters and Setting. The first place you will want to go is into the Settings. Here you can either enter a zip code or select the locate icon in the upper left corner and the app will find your current location. You can then choose the radius in which you would like the application to search. The radius options start at 5 miles and go in increments of five up to a 50 mile radius. You can also learn more about the application by selecting the About option. Once you have entered everything into the Settings, you can then choose either the Movies or Theaters option.

If you select the Movies options, you will get a list of current movie that are playing in the theaters near you. You can sort the movies by Title or Rating. When you select a movie you will get the movie’s page which gives a short description of the movie and a list of all the theaters, with-in the radius you chose, that are showing the movie. Below each theater title it will display the times in which that movie is showing in that theater.

If you select the Theater option on the lower menu bar, you will get a list of all the theaters with-in the radius you chose. You can sort the list by name or distance. If you select one of the theaters on the list you are given the address of the theater (which can then be selected and will open in Google Maps), a phone number for the theater (which can also be selected which will call the number, a list of the movies that are playing in that theater and the times each of the movies are showing.

I personally like to have all my information in one spot. Which means I would prefer to see the address of the theater even when I am in the Movies search. Other wise, once I find a movie I want to see and figure out which theater is showing it…I have to go into the Theaters option in order to get the map and phone number for that theater. But, that is just personal preference. I do like that you are given a description and rating of the movie as well as the theaters it is available in.

But before you start complaining, you might want to see how iPhone 3G performs in comparison to other 3G smart phones.

When you buy the latest version of any product, you expect it to be better than its predecessor in all respects. It might not be the case when it comes to iPhone 3G’s battery life.

The results of the battery life tests carried out by folks at AnandTech on the new iPhone 3G show that the original iPhone had a much better battery life than Apple’s new iPhone 3G. You can see from the chart below that you can keep browsing with iPhone 3G for a little over 3 hours (i.e. 197 minutes) while with the original iPhone over Edge you can surf the web for almost 6 hours (i.e 343 minutes).

If you have upgraded to iPhone firmware 2.0 or have bought Apple’s new iPhone 3G then here is an interesting iPhone Tip you can check out, spotted by Cory Bohon over at TUAW.

When you type a website URL in the address bar, you can now hold down the “.com” button to get a selection of 3 other domain name endings: “.net,” “.edu,” and “.org” and tap on any of the endings to insert them in the address bar.

You should also get “.net,” “.edu,” and “.org.” domain name endings along with “.com” by holding down the period button in the compose email screen.

Another reason why iPhone’s virtual keyboard is revolutionary, with a firmware update Apple was able to introduce a simple but neat feature.
