Before we begin I feel that it is important to explain that only some kinds of phones can be unlocked. Specifically phones that are compatible with the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) network and have SIM Cards. GSM phones contain a small, removable card, known as a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module). This SIM Card is programmed with your carrier’s subscription information and it stores your phonebook information. A SIM card can be removed and placed into another GSM phone, allowing you to quickly switch handsets while keeping your contacts and carrier’s subscription information.

Verizon recently announced its timeline for integrating recently-acquired Alltel into its network and business. Although the business deal was completed on Friday, re-branding won’t begin until the second quarter of 2009, and will continue in phases through the third quarter, as billing system changes are completed. These billing system changes, when complete, will enable mobile-to-mobile calling minutes among both Verizon and former Alltel customers. Current Alltel customers can retain their current plans, including MyCircle, during the transition, and will receive a letter in the coming weeks explaining options for transitioning to Verizon. Verizon: Alltel Deal to Close Jan. 9
Verizon Wireless indicated in regulatory filings that it plans to close its acquisition of Alltel on Friday, January 9. Verizon is paying $5.9 billion for Alltel, as well as taking on $22.9 billion of debt. The acquisition will make the merged entity the largest wireless provider in the U.S., with 78 million customers. AT&T Going After Verizon Wireless Assets
As part of its acquisition of Alltel Wireless, Verizon Wireless must divest $3 billion worth of spectrum and other assets, including coverage of some 2.1 million subscribers spread across 22 different states. The assets are up to Verizon to sell, but AT&T has made its interest in acquiring those assets clear. The Rural Cellular Association and the Organization for the Promotion and Advancement of Small Telecommunications Companies voiced their concerns, as did the public interest group Public Knowledge. They feel the transfer of assets from the largest wireless network operator to the second largest network operator may not be in the best interest of consumers. The Department of Justice must approve the divestitures, and will examine each market individually to make sure that competition is preserved.
Verizon to Add Alltel Customers to Mobile to Mobile Service, Change Branding
As a part of the merger between Verizon Wireless and Alltel, Alltel customers will be able to freely call Verizon Wireless customers as soon as network integration is completed, with an online tool available soon to check and see if the number qualifies for the newly branded Verizon Mobile-to-Mobile calling service.

Alltel Invests in Mobile Wallet Services in 2009
Today, Alltel announced a new mobile banking service that it plans to roll out to customers. The Alltel Wallet will take advantage of the software and business relationships from mFoundry to provide access to more financial institutions, as well as other services such as peer-to-peer payments. Alltel already offers mobile banking services. The Alltel Wallet will become available in early 2009.
