Sprint Trimming Work Force By 8,000
Today Sprint announced that it is taking drastic cost-cutting measures in an effort to save money. Part of the cost cutting comes in the form of staff reductions. Sprint will layoff 8,000 employees by March 31, with about 10% of that figure coming through the voluntary separation plan announced in late 2008. Sprint said the layoffs will hit every level of its business. Other cost-cutting measures include a freeze in salary increases, a freeze in 401(k) matching, and a freeze in its tuition reimbursement program. Sprint has lost millions of customers over the last year. Sprint Rehashes Direct Connect Plans
Today Sprint announced a new set of calling plans for business users of its Direct Connect service. The Unlimited Workgroup plans offers unlimited Direct Connect and Group Connect, plus unlimited text messaging, mobile-to-mobile minutes and night and weekend minutes for $30 per month per line. Add $10 to get unlimited data, Web browsing and GPS navigation on Nextel phones or add $20 for those features on PowerSource and Nextel Direct Connect capable phones. Sprint is also offering pooled voice minutes starting at 500 for $30 per month or 2000 for $100 per line. Boost to Offer Unlimited iDEN Plan
Sprint subsidiary Boost Mobile announced that it is offering a new $50 per month calling plan. The new plan, called Monthly Unlimited, will give customers unlimited voice minutes, SMS, wireless Web and PTT services for $50 per month. This new plan is specifically for the Boost’s iDEN network. The new plan will be available beginning January 22, and Boost plans to launch new handsets that will be compatible with the service, including at least one new bar-style phone. Sprint Launches Push-to-Send Location Feature
Sprint today announced a new service that allows Nextel customers to send their location information simply by pressing the Direct Connect button. NextMail Locator allows customers with compatible phones to add the GPS coordinates, physical street address and an interactive map of their current position to NextMail messages. The service costs $20/month for unlimited use. Nokia Kills Off WiMax-Equipped Internet Tablet
Nokia has confirmed that it is no longer going to produce the N810 WiMax Edition tablet. A company official told Phone Scoop, The Nokia N810 WiMax Edition has reached the expected end of its lifecycle. We will continue to follow the WiMax network development and new product decisions will be considered based on the evolution of the business.
